Museums in Nicosia

The A. G. Leventis Gallery is the realization of a grand vision, born out of Anastasios G. Leventis' desire to establish a public gallery in his homeland. He wanted to ensure that the remarkable art collection he amassed during his lifetime could be appreciated and enjoyed by his fellow countrymen, women, and children.

In the Dali Village area of Cyprus lies the significant archaeological site of Idalion, renowned for its abundant discoveries displayed in prestigious museums worldwide. The origins of this ancient city are attributed to Chalcanor, an Achaean hero from the Trojan War and a descendant of Teucer, the founder of Salamis.

The Cultural Centre of the Archbishop Makarios III Foundation boasts four distinct art galleries, each showcasing a remarkable collection of art representing various periods of Western-European history. Spanning from the Renaissance to modern times, the galleries proudly display masterpieces from renowned artists alongside Greek and Cypriot treasures.

Situated within the walled city of Nicosia, the Byzantine Museum houses an extensive and representative array of Byzantine art, making it the most affluent collection on the island. On display are over 200 icons, spanning from the 9th to the 19th centuries, alongside an assortment of sacred vessels, vestments, robes, and books.

The Byzantine Museum of the Holy Bishopric of Tamasos and Oreinis can be found within the Bishopric Palace, located in the community of Episkopeio, Nicosia. This museum showcases an array of Byzantine and post-Byzantine artifacts, which date back from the 5th century to the early 20th century. Among the fascinating exhibits are icons, liturgical objects, priestly garments, manuscripts, coins, ceramics, and various religious items. Most of these treasures originate from different communities within the bishopric region

The Centre of Visual Arts & Research (CVAR) serves as the headquarters for the Costas and Rita Severis Foundation, a non-governmental, non-profit organization dedicated to exploring Cyprus' cultural heritage.

The Classic Motorcycle Museum stands as the remarkable achievement of motorcycle enthusiast Andreas Nicolaou, who dedicated two decades of passion and effort to its creation. Presently, the collection boasts over 150 pieces, showcasing motorcycles spanning the years 1914 to 1983. Among the renowned brands on display are AJS, MV Agusta, Matchless, Norton, BSA, Triumph, Ariel, BMW, James, Moto Guzzi, Royal Enfield, and numerous others.

The Cyprus Handicraft Centre serves as a hub for creating and selling authentic folk art and crafts deeply rooted in tradition. At this unique establishment, visitors have the opportunity to witness skilled artisans in action at their respective workshops, practicing various time-honored crafts like embroidery, lace making, tapestry, weaving, basketry, woodcarving, pottery, metalwork (including copperware and silver), as well as leather and garment making.

The Cyprus Museum, the largest and primary archaeological institution on the island, showcases the evolution of Cypriot civilization from the Neolithic Age to the Early Byzantine period (7th century). Its impressive collections consist of artifacts from extensive excavations conducted across the entire island, which have significantly contributed to the advancement of Cypriot archaeology and research on the Mediterranean's cultural heritage.

The Cyprus Museum of Natural History, nestled within the enchanting grounds of the Carlsberg Brewery, stands as a remarkable testament to the island's biodiversity and geological wonders. Under the esteemed patronage of 'The Photos Photiades Charity, Scientific and Cultural Foundation,' this museum has earned its reputation as the largest and most comprehensive natural history exhibition on the island. With a vast collection of approximately 2,500 exhibits, visitors are treated to a captivating journey through the rich tapestry of Cyprus' natural heritage.
